About Food Rx
In 2020 the Alberni Valley Food Security Society partnered with Island Health, Indigenous liaisons, Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, Alberni District Secondary School, Alberni Farmers' Institute and local food producers to run the initial Food Rx program. AVFSS is in the process of establishing funding to continue this program and continue pursuing the following goals:
-
To provide nutritionally insecure families a weekly box of local and healthy produce comprised of ocean and land based agricultural products , including a traditional foods component.
-
To encourage a circular economy and healthy community within the Alberni Valley by ensuring that all products are grown, processed or produced locally.
-
To build capacity and synergies that transform how we address food security. Adopting the local Nuu-Chah-Nulth ideology of hishuk'ish tsawalk - everything is one; viewing it as a holistic and cyclical endeavor.
